And rather inconveniently, the behaviors behind it typically take years of work to address. I thought I had put mine mostly behind me, but I recently discovered just how much work I still have left to do.From the earliest days of my career as an organizational psychologist, Ive been told that I can come across as a bit impersonal in work settings.The first person who gave me this feedback welches my very first boss. Incensed at the mere suggestion that it could be true, I decided he had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. Obviously, my outer behavior wholly reflected my inner motivations to be exceedingly warm, courageously vulnerable, and might I even say, desperately charmingBut over time, as other people started to tell me the exact same thi ng, this conviction began to fade.I realized that I had two choices I could continue to dismiss what I was hearing, or I could accept that the way I was coming across in professional settings was not, in fact, the way I thought I was coming across. It seemed wise to choose the latter.Desperate for answers, I approached a few trusted coworkers I knew would tell me the truth. And though it was difficult, they helped me see what I couldnt. Apparently, as an extreme data geek, my tendency to lead with - and sometimes hide behind - scientific research made it difficult to connect with me.Though Ive always found the words studies show . . . to be the two most charming, persuasive, and personal words in the English language, others evidently didnt share that belief. Add in my perfectionism and introverted nature, and I began to understand why people werent seeing the human side of me at work. It was there, but I sure wasnt showing it.Armed with these insights, I had another major decision to make. If I wanted to reach my goals as a writer, speaker, and business owner, did I need to change the way I was showing up (gasp)? I examined the most successful and well-regarded leaders in my field, and to a person, they are masters of personal connection, be it on the page, on the stage, or online.I realized that if I didnt start to tear down the walls Id built up around me, Id never be able to make the contribution I wanted to make. So, over the last decade, Ive worked hard to reveal my inner Bren Brown - to show the imperfect, vulnerable human hiding behind Tasha the Author and Tasha the Researcher.(The simple fact that Ive devoted the last three years to studying the topic of self-awareness has only reinforced the urgent importance of addressing this limitation).And though Ill never fully understand why its so difficult for me to just be me, I am proud of the progress Ive made.Flash forward to a podcast interview I did this week. A few minutes into the conversation, the host stopped me. I feel like youre giving me answers as Tasha the Author, he said, Why dont you just try to beTasha? People cant connect with your work until they connect with youI let out a knowing sigh. Guilty as charged, I admitted, deciding it was as good of an opportunity as any to share my personal struggle of being too impersonal.The process of gaining insight into who we are and how we come across- and changing the behaviors that arent serving us - is indeed a lifelong one. It can be frustrating, difficult, and messy. We can hit obstacles or setbacks and feel daunted by the work it takes. And as I was recently reminded, just when we think weve finally put something behind us, we might discover that we still have a way to go.But the fact that we are never truly finished becoming self-aware is also what makes the journey so exciting. No matter how much insight weve achieved, there is always more to be gained. As author Marianne Williamson once said, It takes courage . . . to endure the sharp pains of self-discovery rather than choose . . . the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.We can choose to be content with this dull pain, or we can take charge courageously seek the truth on our own terms, make sense of it, and work on what we need to work on. (Photos by Harrison McClary)ASME wrapped up its inaugural series of Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) with a lively and action-packed event, E-Fest East, which was held last month at Tennessee Technological University.Approximately 835 students from mora than 80 colleges and universities attended the festival in Cookeville, Tenn., located about 90 miles west of Nashville. Participants came from all parts of the United States as well as otzu sich countries including Canada, Colombia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Pakistan and Taiwan. Weve had so many people here, its great, said Josh Watkins, one of two lead Tennessee Tech student E-Fest volunteers. Weve met students from all over the country, and from all over the world. Its great to hang out with all of them. And then, on top of that, we had professional development and keynote sessions. We get technical information from experts. It is all-around awesome. Im so excited to be here at E-Fest, said Karen Ohland, a member of the ASME Board of Governors who participated in an ASME roundtable discussion. It is amazing to see the energy and excitement of the students, to see the people who will be changing the world. The electricity is tangible.Tents set up for E-Fest on Tennessee Techs beautiful quad remained empty over the three-day event, from April 21 to 23, as thunderstorms forced most of the events indoors. But the 38 teams competing in the Human Powered Vehicle Competition braved the rain. Rose-Hu lman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, dominated the soggy event, winning five awards, including one for best overall entry, with stellar performances in both the speed and endurance events. With its vehicle, the Rose Pedal, the team also placed first in the innovation category, thanks to a design mechanism that allowed Rose Pedal to lean into turns. Amy Elliott of the Oak Ridge National Laboratorys Manufacturing beweis Facility was one of two keynote presenters at E-Fest East.South Dakota State University did especially well, too, with its vehicle, The Black Jack. The team came away with five awards, including first place finishes in the endurance, womens speed and mens speed events.Other competitions at E-Fest East included the Old Guard Oral and Poster competitions, with first-place finishes by Joseph DaSilva of Western New England University and Kyle Hunter of the University of South Florida, respectively. Tennessee Tech came in first in the Innovati ve Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D) Challenge, a competition for products made with 3D printers, while students from the University of Mississippi took top honors at the Student Design Competition, a robotic pentathlon. University of Wisconsin?Madison students watch their robot attempt the difficult stair climb during the Student Design Competition pentathlon.E-Fest East was much more than competition, however. The event featured two keynote presentations, including one by Amy Elliott, a researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratorys Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. Elliott is well known for helping to popularize science and technology, due to appearances on television and in web series. Eva Hkansson, an engineer who holds the record as fastest woman motorcyclist with her KillaJoule electric motorcycle, was the events second keynote presenter. This was the second E-Fest appearance by Hkansson, who again brought her popular message to students, that engineers can be s uperheroes. E-Fest East also featured workshops and lightning talks, with representatives from Autodesk, Siemens PLM, Southern Company, Nissan, NASA, Local Motors, Altair, and many more. Sponsors included Siemens PLM, Autodesk, Eastman Chemical, Altair, ANSYS, Maplesoft, Microsoft Surface and Denso. George Mason University team members working in the rain on their vehicle, the Cerberus.Never before have I seen so many people from so many different groups come together so effectively in such a short time, observed Amip Shah, chair of the ASME E-Fest Steering Committee and a roundtable participant. The energy and passion of the students was simply amazing, as was the collaboration between ASME staff, volunteers, and our hosts at Tennessee Tech. I strongly believe that the magic of ASME happens when folks who wouldnt ordinarily cross paths come together in tafelgeschirr of a greater cause. Thats what I saw happen here with E-fest East, and I couldnt be more delighted.As p articipants passed empty tents on wet paths as they crisscrossed the campus, it seemed as though they hardly missed sunny skies. The rain has definitely made everything soggier, said Lindsey Grissom, also a lead student volunteer at Tennessee Tech. We were very worried when we saw lightning coming our way. But the entire team worked hard to get everything up and running again once we moved inside. The enthusiasm from the teams has not been dampened at all by the rain. Having them displayed somewhere in your home or in family members home is certainly up to you, but for most people, younger family members tend to revere older veteran members of the family. Having something to show them and stories to tell is part of family lore. Enjoy it and help them understand that freedom isnt free. Finding Your Veteran Records and Awards Unfortunately, over the years many veterans have lost, misplaced, or discarded the medals and ribbons they earned while in the Military. Sometimes, the servicemember never received the medal or award for some reason, even though the citation was written and the award approved. Many pawn shops, military surplus stores, and vendors sell military medals, ribbons, and awards, but there is also a way to obtain replacements (sometimes for free) from the Government from the National Archives website. Personal Family Story of Veteran Awards Found There is nothing quite like the feeling of making sure members of your family or close circle of friends are remembered for their service. One Christmas, our family was able to get all of my grandfathers ribbons, medals, unit patches, and badges and made a case of them that he had prominently displayed in his home for the rest of his life. He was a World War II veteran in the 3rd Army under General Patton travelling from Normandy to Berlin. We were able to do this with his social security number and a request form. Because he was Army, I was able to make the request as I was Next of Kin (NOK) eligible: For the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps Coast Guard, the NOK is defined as: the un-remarried widow or widower, son, daughter, father, mother, brother or sisterFor the Army, the NOK is defined as: the surviving spouse, eldest child, father or mother, eldest sibling or eldest grandchild Contact the Branch of Service Requests for the issuance or replacement of military service medals, decorations, and awards should be directed to the specific branch of the military in which the veteran served. However, for Air Force (including Army Air Corps) and Army personnel, the National Personnel Records Center will verify the awards to which a veteran is entitled and forward the request with the verification to the appropriate service department for issuance of the medals. Generally, there is no charge for medal or award replacements, if requested by the Veteran. Only one replacement is allowed per medal or decoration. There may be a small fee charged for replacements requested by family members of deceased servicemembers. The length of time to receive a response or your medals and awards varies depending upon the branch of service sending the medals, but the process can take several months (up to one year) due to manning and funding shortfalls at the National Military Personnel Records Center. You May Love Work, But Does Work Love You Back Yesterday was Valentines Day, the annual celebration of love between couples, and the love of skyrocketing revenue for chocolatiers, florists, jewelers, and restaurants. OK, reality and cynicism aside, it would also be nice if employers used Valentines Day as an opportunity to express their appreciation for their employees. It wouldn't be love, exactly, but it could feel close to it if you'd been devoting a lot of energy to your work and had received little appreciation in return. At one of my former employers, which at the time employed nearly 9,000 around the globe, the founder and president would meet with everyone (really!) once a year at their office. He would then hand each person a card with $500 cash inside. But heres the better part: Before he met with you, he'd find out some things you accomplished in the previous year and would commend you for your work. This was the only time of the year most employees saw him. But the fact that he made an effort to find out what you did and how it helped the organization was beyond impressive, and one of the reasons the company was a great employer. The money was nice, but the recognition made the gesture so much better. Thats the case for manyif not mostemployees today. Its the recognition that makes them want to come to work each day. Its the satisfaction that a job well done does not go unnoticed, such as bringing in a project ahead of deadline or under budget, taking on extra work to cover for someone elses leave of absence, or putting in extra time to ensure a customer got what it wanted. In short, you like to feel that they love having you there! If you dont feel the love, chances are youre going to look for something new.

But have you ever wondered what goes on backstage? The truth is, despite the glam factor, fashion shows are one of the most demanding events to produce. Behind the scenes, thereâs an army of people working day and night to make sure the show goes off without a hitch. It takes months and months of preparation and tons of hard work. In fact, the planning for the next fashion show begins as soon as the last one ends! Not All Glitz and Glam Even Carolina Herrera admitted fashions shows arenât all glitz and glam. As she told Vogue, âThe fashion shows are so fabulous, but you go backstage and you see what is really happening: You see the work.â Most of the big stuff, like the stage construction, lighting, and sound, are set up well in advance. But the moments before the show are a flurry of last-minute activity and, well, madness. Organized madness, but madness nonetheless. So, what really happens behind the scenes of a fashion show? Quick Fixes Even though designers have been preparing for months in advance, there are always last-minute fixes. Stylists work under pressure to make sure everything is absolutely perfect, even if that means hemming a skirt moments before a model walks onto the runway or quickly scoring a pair of slippery heels to make sure a model wonât pull a Naomi Campbell, circa 1993. Last Minute Changes A fashion show is a whole lot of unknowns. Sometimes models are late. Or, they show up late and covered in glitter and hairspray from a previous show and need to be cleaned up and re-done in a matter of minutes. And sometimes, models donât show up at all because they got an offer from a bigger name. Itâs not uncommon either for a VIP to show up unannounced and demand a front-row seat for an already packed show or for a stylist to reconsider her shoe choice 30 seconds before a model is supposed to hit the runway. Is it any wonder why things can get a little frantic behind the scenes of a fashion show? A Whole Lot of Running Around When it comes to fashion shows, timing is everything. And if that means a model has to run to the catwalk to make sure sheâs in line or sprint backstage (in 5-inch heels, no less) to change outfits before sheâs due to walk again, well, thatâs just another day at the office. Fashion weeks are even more hectic. Sometimes models will have to crisscross the city to get from one show to the next, leaving mere minutes to get scrubbed clean and start all over again. Photographs Galore Backstage is always packed with models, designers, managers, stylists, makeup artists, hairdressers, publicists, and other fashion elite who are there to ensure a fabulous show. Oh, and then you also have to squeeze in a few dozen photographers who are all jostling to document the big event. Designers have caught on that their fans are dying to get an all-access pass to something they may never get to experience in person.
